  • The Last Brick

(March 8, 2017) Photo: The laying of the last brick. Students (Left to right) Beryl Bell, Sean Vanbergen, and Matthew Palmer set the final graphite brick into place near the UCN cryostat. The graphite is used as a moderator and reflector for neutrons, giving them a chance to enter the superfluid helium in the cryostat and become ultracold.

  • How many neutrons do we make?

Tuesday, November 22, 2016 (Vancouver). PHOTO: Lori Rebenitsch (U. Winnipeg/U. Manitoba, left) and Tatsuya Kikawa (TRIUMF, right) insert samples for neutron irradiation. The residual activity of the samples will tell us how many neutrons we made, and their temperature.

  • Lithium-6 or not?

Lithium-6 captures neutrons, splitting apart into an alpha and a triton. If you put regular scintillating glass on top of glass containing Li-6, it makes a very efficient ultracold neutron detector. The trouble is, once they're bonded together, can you tell which side contains the Li-6? Blair Jamieson and Lori Rebenitsch figured out a way that doesn't require an ultracold neutron source!
